The 25-year-old was found fighting for his life and was raced to hospital.

He still remained there this afternoon in a critical condition, and the cops were still working to identify his next of kin.

Police are now pleading with the public to help track down the man who attacked the 25-year-old - and the woman he fled the scene with.

They said the man was described to have black curly hair and a beard, be aged in his mid 20s, and have a middle eastern appearance.

He was said to have rushed from the scene with an unidentified woman.

They took off towards the Oxford Circus tube station.

A significant crime scene remained in place on Oxford Street today, with forensic officers spotted scouring the area for evidence.

Photos of the scene show a pair of bloody trainers inside the police cordon.

Cops confirmed that no one had been arrested at this stage.

This morning police said the man had been stabbed, but this afternoon said he had received "serious head injuries" as a result of "blunt force".

Detective Chief Inspector Michael Dougall, of the Met’s RTPC, said: “At this early stage it appears the victim sustained his injuries as a result of blunt force.

"But, however the injuries were inflicted, we now have a young man critically ill in hospital and we are appealing for information."

He continued: "I would like to thank those people on the bus who have already come forward, but we also need to trace where these people went after they left the bus.

"Anyone driving along Oxford Circus or Regents Street with any dash cam footage, please check the footage for the people described.

We now have a young man critically ill in hospital and we are appealing for information.

A Met Office spokesperson said this morning: "Police were called at about 22:20hrs on Tuesday, 28 February to reports of a man stabbed on board a bus on Oxford Street.

"Officers attended and found a 25-year-old man critically injured.

"He was taken to hospital by the London Ambulance Service where he remains with life-threatening injuries.

"A crime scene is in place and parts of Oxford Street remain closed to traffic.
