Snow could hit England tomorrow after temperatures fell as low as -4C in Scotland overnight, Met Office warns

THE UK could be hit by snow tomorrow after temperatures plunged to a bone-chilling -4C in Scotland overnight, the Met Office has warned.

Brits have already been bracing themselves for freezing conditions after warnings of the Arctic 'Beast from the East'.

The UK is set to have a cloudy start to the week with scattered light showers and some brighter breaks in north-western areas, according to the Met Office.

Forecasters said the weather is likely to get colder after the milder weather early last week and it could feel "chillier" than usual.

And the weather agency forecast that wintry showers could be on the cards in some areas of England tomorrow.

Met Office meteorologist Craig Snell said: "A band of showers over England could turn a bit wintry at times, especially over higher ground.

";However this is certainly not expected too much at lower levels and certainly not settling on the surface."

The forecaster said it will be chilly on Monday and Tuesday, with a noticeable north-easterly wind in the south and patchy frost overnight as the temperature could further dip next week.

Temperatures are set to be below 10C in most areas during the daytime and could well dip below freezing point at night.

The Met Office's long-range weather forecast stated that from Thursday onwards “showers, possibly wintry, are expected for the north and east at times, especially for coastal areas.”

Temperatures will be “generally rather cold” with “an increased likelihood of wintry showers in the north and east” and the “small possibility of more organised rain or snow spreading southwards”.

A cold spell in the second week of March is expected due to a phenomenon called Sudden Stratospheric Warming, also known as the “Beast from the East”, which began in mid February.

Met Office weather forecaster Tom Morgan said: “It does look like the month will begin on the cold side. There is quite a chilly week to come.

“From next weekend onwards there are some small indications we will see winds switch to a northerly direction and that will bring much colder conditions southwards.

"It is going to be Scotland and the north eastern parts of the UK that are likely to see any snow.

“But at this stage it is quite finely balanced. We could start to see a bit more of milder Atlantic flow develop from the middle part of the month onwards.

"It is too early to say but it does look like at the moment that March has a slightly higher chance of being a colder month than a milder month.”
