MPs react with horror as Britain wakes up to the news of Donald Trump’s stunning win to become the next US president

AS BRITAIN woke up to the news Donald Trump had pulled off a stunning victory MPs reacted with shock and horror to the US Presidential election result.

Politicians from all parties posted messages on social media as the real estate mogul was announced as Barack Obama’s successor this morning.

Mr Trump was labelled “racist” and his win “proof a pig’s bladder on a stick can be elected as leader of the free world” as MPs bemoaned the defeat for Hillary Clinton.

Dan Jarvis, the Labour MP for Barnsley, said the “decent left of centre politics” had been “defeated by divisive right-wing populism”.

His colleague Lucy Powell said “words fail me”, while Tory Nadine Dorries simply posted on Twitter: “NO NO NO NO!”

Labour’s Owen Smith labelled Mr Trump racist and attacked Vladimir Putin at the same time, tweeting:  “A racist in The Whitehouse & a human rights abuser in The Kremlin.

“Time for us to leave Europe, or time to try and lead it & rebuild hope?”

Steve Reed said: “President Trump, a terrifying day for the world and for everyone who values democracy and freedom.”

Carol Monaghan posted: “Xenophobic, racist, sectarian and sexist rhetoric has just been legitimised. We should all be very afraid.”

And Caroline Lucas from the Green Party said: "A devastating day. For women. For people of colour. For a tolerant society.

But not all MPs were upset, with several Tories congratulating him on his win, with Nigel Huddlestone saying: “By electing Trump US electorate show they don't like being told how to vote any more than British voters.”

David Morris tweeted that he will “be a Reagan of our times and recalibrate America and the world in a steady businesslike manner”.
