Footage captured by a holidaymaker sailing past a private island shows the dog clambering off a wooden platform and onto a rock before jumping into the water above a huge shark.

Shocked tourists from the UK and US can be heard yelling at the canine, begging it to get back out.

One boat trip guest can be heard shouting: “Get out baby”.

Another person cries: “Stop going after it.”

But their pleas fell on deaf ears as the brave pooch continues to splash about in the water, chasing the shark lurking below.

As the pair thrash about in the water, the dog appears to come out on top as the defeated shark swims away – much to the relief of tourists watching on from the boat.

Footage of the stunning battle was shared by boat-operator Exuma Water Sports.

Some 30 guests and two crew members were in the middle of a trip in the Bahamas organised by the company when the intrepid dog decided to try its luck against the shark.

Rebecca Lightbourn, reservation manager of Exuma Water Sports, told the : “We had slowed down in order to give the guests a look, and the shark meandered its way over to the shore and at the same time that we were all looking at the shark, the dog also noticed the shark

“Whether he wanted to protect his island or just wanted to play with what looked to him like a really big fish in the water, he just went after it.”

She said the dog – owned by the caretaker of the private island – often greets tourists sailing past.

Rebecca added: “The dog always comes running out to just chase the boat and say hello.

“And it’s sort of become a part of the tour, that we always wave to the dog as we go past.”
