PEER PANIC

Peers and Lords outraged as they look set to miss out on King’s Coronation with invites given to NHS and charity workers

PEERS and Lords are outraged as they are set to miss out on the King’s Coronation with seats handed out to everyday folk from across the country.

Around 2,250 people will be inside Westminster Abbey with the majority of seats taken up by representatives from charities, NHS and unsung heroes.

Guests inside the Abbey will represent all geographical locations, ages and ethnic backgrounds, it is understood.

The Sun understands Members of the House of Lords have been lobbying the Cabinet Office trying to ensure they have a front row of history.

Formal talks on a guest list will take place within the government next week - less than three months before the Coronation.

But only close pals of the King and Lords and Peers who are in government will make a shortlist, it is claimed.

More than 800 Lord and Peers were invited to Queen Elizabeth II’s Coronation in 1953 when 8,251 guests filled the Abbey.

But the number of invites for the first Coronation in 70 years for members of the 780-strong House of Lords is thought to be reduced to double figures.

The number of MPs is already going to be scaled down.

Only two dozen MPs will get invitations to the Coronation - sparking a pick and choose headache for Rishi Sunak.

The Sun understands a slimmed down guest list means only top Cabinet Ministers, senior Privy Councillors and opposition chiefs will likely make the cut.

Senior royal sources deny the Coronation will be a damp squib saying it will be “spectacular” and will “knock your socks off”.
