It is believed a rider and pillion passenger, both wearing helmets, were on the motorbike.

They did not stop after the collision, said police earlier.

Cops confirmed that a man was arrested after the shocking crash on Saturday.

In a statement, Avon and Somerset Police said: "A man is in police custody after a child, six, suffered potentially life-threatening injuries in a collision with a motorcycle in Bristol earlier today, Saturday 28 January.

"The collision in Wade Street happened just after 6pm. The motorcyclist failed to stop. The child remains in a critical but stable condition in hospital.

"His next of kin are being supported by specially-trained family liaison officers.

"Officers hope to reopen Wade Street by 11pm. Enquiries continue and we still want to hear from anyone with information or dashcam footage which could help the investigation."

An earlier statement from police read: "We’re seeking witnesses, dashcam footage and information after a child aged six suffered potentially life-threatening injuries in a collision with a motorcycle on Wade Street, Bristol.

"Wade Street is closed between the A420 Lawfords Gate and the A4032 Newfoundland Circus while collision investigators examine the scene and initial enquiries are carried out.

"The child has gone to hospital and their next of kin are aware and being supported by specialist family liaison officers. Our thoughts are with them.

"If you saw what happened or have any dashcam or other footage which could help, please contact us."
