Watford General hospital alert: Chemical spill triggers massive evacuation as fire crews rush to scene

WATFORD General Hospital has been evacuated after a chemical spill this morning.

Fire crews rushed to the scene to clean up and decontaminate the site after fumes "caused some problems for staff".

Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed it was called to the incident at the maternity ward at 10.35am this morning.

The service dispatched three fire engines and a decontamination unit after the hospital called in the emergency when fumes were noticed by staff.

Hertfordshire Police confirmed that it sent officers to the scene, but that the response is being led by fire crews.

A video from the scene, posted to Twitter, showed emergency vehicles blocking of a road next to the hospital building.
