UK weather turns freezing for Bonfire Night as temperatures plummet to -2C – and it’s going to stay cold

The weekend will see heavy rain for some parts of the country, with gales and cold winds bringing snow and hail

THE UK is set to freeze this weekend as cold weather arrives with gales and frost, followed by hail and snow next week.

Today snow is expected to fall over the Scottish mountains and heavy showers will affect the northern, western and southern parts of the UK.

Some sunshine is predicted to cling on despite the cloud cover over much of the country, but it will be cold.

Winds should pick up later in the day, with north-east Scotland hit with coastal gales.

Tonight will be cold and breezy with frost in northern and western areas, as showers arrive in the east with gales in the north-east.

The weekend should be relatively dry, with some localised heavy showers on parts of the coast.

Temperatures are expected to plummet to -2C meaning people celebrating Guy Fawkes Night will need to wrap up and keep warm.

Gales will still be a feature for the eastern coast, with thunder arriving in the north by the evening.

October was fairly mild and the start of November followed suit, but by the weekend a blast of cold air will have shaken off the milder temperatures.

November looks like it will be cold and frosty, with chilly gales, hail, thunder and snow over high ground threatening to arrive.

Met Office spokesman Grahame Madge said: “Showers this weekend will be thundery with hail and there is the chance of snow over high ground in Scotland, northern Britain and parts of Wales.

“It is also going to be windy in paces with the possibility of gales around the east coast with overnight frosts.

“The cold is going to last into the middle of next week on current indications as we stay in this northerly flow.

“In terms of temperatures there is the possibility of -1C or -2C overnight in parts at the weekend with highs of 13C elsewhere.”

Temperatures will remain low next week, with frosts more widespread.

Inland areas should see some sunshine and drier weather, but showers will affect coastal areas - bringing hail, sleet and snow at times.
