Iran’s leader calls Clinton and Trump ‘liars and backstabbers who have annihilated America’s reputation’
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei says presidential hopefuls are 'proof of the destruction of human values in the United States'
IRAN'S supreme leader has ripped into US presidential candidates Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said the pair's comments in TV debates
"are sufficient for the annihilation of the reputation of the United States."
He said the level of debate showed the "catastrophe" of American politics and warned against any further negotiations with Washington.
In a speech reported on his website, Khamenei said: "Their statements are proof of the destruction of human values in the United States."
Khamenei also described Americans as "liars, untrustworthy, deceitful and backstabbers".
He added: "Some say we should negotiate and compromise with the United States with regard to Syria, Hezbollah in Lebanon, Iraq, Afghanistan, Yemen and even our internal affairs.
"Negotiating with the United States will not solve the problems. First, because they lie, they don't respect their commitments, trick others. And secondly, because the United States is itself in crisis."
America has imposed sanctions on Iran because of its missile programme and human rights issues - which effectively locks the country out of the global banking system.
Khamenei's comments came in a speech marking the 37th anniversary of the storming of the US Embassy in Tehran by radical students in 1979
Iran's President Hassan Rouhani has described Trump and Clinton as "bad and worse," without specifying which was which.
