Attacker shot 50-year-old man in front of wife as his accomplice stabbed another customer in shock raid
THIS is the terrifying moment an armed bank robber pointed a gun at staff in a bank – before shooting a customer in the head.
Jonathan Pay, 46, and his accomplice launched the attack as a customer tackled him to the ground during an attempted raid of Lloyd’s Bank in Liphook, Hampshire on May 16.
The bandit shot the 50-year-old man with an airgun in front of his horrified wife as his partner in crime, who is still on the run, stabbed him in abdomen.
Bungling Pay also carefully packed a balaclava and gloves in a bag for the raid – but forgot to put them on. The items were picked up by the victim’s wife and forensically linked him to the scene.
The couple, from Headley Down, have now been nominated for a Chief Constable’s bravery award after the attack, which left the victim with a pellet lodged in his skull.
Detective Constable Kat Bird said: “At the sentencing hearing the Judge stated that Jonathan Pay had acted in a ‘chilling and callous way’ and that it is ‘clear that he is dangerous’.
“Thankfully nobody else was seriously hurt, and we are continuing to carry out enquiries to establish the identity of the second man involved in the attempted robbery.”
Pay was jailed today for 16 and a half years after admitting to two counts of attempted robbery, a count of possession of an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence, and one count of wounding with intent.
