LIDL SURPRISE

I screamed when I spotted something moving inside my bag of Lidl spinach

A LIZARD survived nine days in a couple’s fridge — hidden in a packet of spinach.

Katherine Bacon, 32, spotted the reptile’s belly pressed up against the sealed packaging when she went to prepare a meal.

She screamed to husband James who thought it was dead until he gave it a prod.

James, 36, said: “It was over 10cm long.

“It woke up and started walking around the bag.

“We were wondering what we were going to do.

“Our main priority was to make sure the lizard was OK.”

James, of Haywards Heath, West Sussex, did some online research and found it was an Italian wall lizard.

It was taken away by the RSPCA in Brighton.

A worker there hopes to adopt it after a 30-day quarantine.

A spokesman said: “At the moment, he’s doing really well.

“A lot of European species around this time of year will go into a state similar to hibernation.

“That’s probably why he managed to survive as opposed to a more tropical species.”

James ordered the spinach online from Lidl, which apologised for the surprise and said its quality assurance department was looking into it.
