Mr Vaz resigned from his last committee amid claims he paid rent boys for sex and asked them to bring cocaine.

Just seven MPs voted against his appointment to the Justice Select Committee, including Tory James Duddridge who said: “I did feel the whole issue was bringing the House into disrepute.”

Scotland Yard is deciding whether to investigate Mr Vaz but Tory MP Andrew Bridgen revealed he is also being probed by Leicestershire Police.

Sir Alistair Graham, who led the Committee on Standards in Public Life, said: “It’s appalling judgment for the Tory whips to support somebody who is under such serious investigation.”
