Mr Vaz was forced to quit as chair of the Commons Home Affairs Committee in September after a police probe over allegations he paid for sex with male escorts and discussed buying of Class A drugs which he claimed he didn't want to take.

Tory MP Andrew Bridgen told MPs four witnesses had been interviewed by Leicestershire Police, with the force's inquiries ongoing for at least 12 months.

Mr Bridgen told MPs: "It's fair to say (Mr Vaz) has quite a history with his appearances before parliamentary standards.

MPs backed the motion which asked for Mr Vaz and fellow Labour MP Kate Green to be appointed to the

Justice Select Committee by 203 votes to seven - majority 196.

Tory Bill Wiggin, chairman of the Committee of Selection, at the start of the debate told the Commons:  "This is the decision of the Committee of Selection and it respects the wish of the Labour Party in electing these members to this committee."

In his opening remarks, Mr Bridgen told MPs: "An allegation, with supporting video footage, implied (Mr Vaz) had offered to purchase class A drugs while using the services of escorts."

He went on: "In July this year the Home Affairs Select Committee published a report calling for the decriminalisation of soliciting by sex workers and also to decriminalise sex workers sharing premises.

"So a potential police investigation still hangs over (Mr Vaz)."

He added any investigation by the parliamentary standards commissioner has been suspended until the results of the police assessment emerge.

Mr Vaz could not be seen in the chamber during the debate.
