“The allegations are truly shocking.” The murder trial involved the shooting dead of a man in London in November 2019.

But the officer and the defendant were said to have been in contact at Belmarsh in Thamesmead, South East London.

The men’s jail houses some of the country’s most dangerous criminals, including terrorists and gang bosses.

Police are checking the officer’s wider circle of contacts.
