Mum of murdered toddler James Bulger speaks of torment as stalker is due to be released from prison
THE tormented mother of murdered toddler James Bulger says she is living in fear after it was revealed her stalker could be out of prison by Christmas.
Denise Fergus said "you just don't what he's capable of" after her demented admirer Howard Wilson was jailed this week.
Wilson was jailed for the maximum sentence of 26 weeks and said to the judge: "Thank you for giving me what I want".
Because Wilson had already spent time in custody he could be out of prison before the end of the year.
Denise told the: "A crazy man like that, you just don't know what he's capable of.
"It brings back some of those terrible feelings I had with James - that fear."
Denise' two-year-old son James was murdered in 1993 by ten-year-old's Jon Venables and Robert Thompson in Liverpool.
Speaking exclusively to the Mirror's Sunday edition the Sunday People, Denise also revealed that she is regularly tipped off on social media about the whereabouts of her son's killers.
She is also anxious about the safety of her three sons Michael, 22, Thomas, 19, and Leon, 17. and worries about them leaving the house .
Denise, who lives in a house surrounded by CCTV cameras, also believes the spirit of tragic James sometimes visits her.
She was interviewed at the office of the James Bulger Memorial Trust - the charity she runs with her 41-year-old husband Stuart.
Denise revealed that being stalked Wilson has caused her to jump out of bed and check the curtains every time she hears a noise at night.
Wilson first harassed her eight years ago and Denise never thought he would re-appear.
She said: "I thought he was done and dusted back then when police cautioned him."
Denise added: "Now I wish they'd sectioned him".
Wilson was captured on CCTV opening a gate at Denise's Merseyside home back in August.
Neighbours then alerted her after he visited a local social club and started asking questions about her.
Denise said: "I had an inkling it was Wilson, then as I walked towards the club I saw him."
The mum-of-three told how she first encountered the stalker back in 2008.
She said: "I opened the door thinking it was Stuart but it was this man who asked ‘Do you want to come out and play?
"I knew he wasn’t right in the head but I didn’t want to provoke him, so I just replied, ‘I’m too busy.’ Fortunately we were having an extension built at the time and one of our builders told him to move on.
"But just a few days later I got this odd gift. It was a cheap football with my name and address written on it in marker pen. Then I started getting postcards and letters.
"They’d just say, ‘hello’ then sometimes he’d sign it with his initials.
"His last card read, ‘Haha, you can’t catch me.’"
Wilson was jailed after a one-day trial this year for his latest antics.
He was also handed an indefinite order preventing him from contacting Denise or her family.
Denise is haunted by Wilson's comments to the judge after he was sentenced, when he remarked: "Thanks for giving me what I want."
She said: "I keep thinking, ‘What did he mean when he said those words? Is he going to be thinking what he can do when he gets out?
"I hope and pray he gets a psychiatric evaluation before he is released."
Denise has told of her torment at how she is often tipped off about where Venables and Thompson are now living.
At a charity event this year she heard someone claim Venables was based in a local hostel.
Denise said: “We get so many people contacting us through social media. And I’ve seen Thompson before from a distance. But what do I do?
“I’ll never forgive but I’m not violent. I’d rather spend my life with my family than behind bars for seeking revenge.”
