A FAMILY were left horrified after they discovered a 5ft-long SNAKE slithering through their brand new car as they travelled down the M5.

The family, travelling from a car dealership in Sheffield back to Bristol, fled the vehicle in terror after a child spotted the orange and white reptile wrapped around the dog's leg.

Unsurprisingly, police were shocked when they attended what they thought was a routine vehicle breakdown on the hard shoulder of the M5 in Worcestershire.

Experts identified the stowaway as a harmless corn snake - but couldn't capture it as it had disappeared into the "car's structure".

Officers from the Central Motorway Police Group revealed the family opted to continue their journey - instead of dismantling the vehicle to carry on with their journey.

They tweeted: "Most bizarre job for a long time.

"Officers attended a breakdown on the M5 in Worcs but it wasn't a breakdown.

"Occupants had found a SNAKE!!...Aaaargh.. we were as surprised as the family (and pet dog!!)

, is has since been revealed the previous owner of the Nissan Navara vehicle, 42-year-old Fiona Wellington, had lost her snake shortly before selling the car.

The snake, said to be called Keith, is still on the loose.
