Killer driver given extra jail time for posting ‘mocking’ snaps on website from his cell
James Maughan, 23, put up selfies while awaiting sentence, adding the message: 'Making a joke of the system'
A DRIVER given ten years’ jail for killing two mates in a crash has been handed another 21 months — for posting mocking Facebook messages from prison.
James Maughan, 23, put up selfies while awaiting sentence, adding the message: “Making a joke of the system.”
A pal of his victims spotted the posts and alerted police. And Maughan was this week given extra time for the offences, which even his own lawyer called “stupid”.
The driver was racing another car when he crashed his Renault Megane Sport at 70mph in Doncaster, South Yorks, last year.
He was jailed in March. But Sheffield crown court has now heard that within weeks of his arrest he was using a smuggled phone to post messages and snaps from prison.
Prosecutor Michael Slater said: “One image had the caption, ‘Making a joke of the system’ and one ‘Jail life’. They caused considerable upset to relatives of the deceased.”
