CANNIBAL KILLER 'TO BE FREED'

Killer caught eating housemate’s LUNG in 2014 ‘to be back on the streets NEXT YEAR’

The cannibal has been a 'model' inmate after being imprisoned in a secure psychiatric care facility

A CANNIBAL who stabbed and beat his housemate before eating his victim's lung has been described as "the nicest guy you could meet" after proving to be a "model" inmate.

Saverio Bellante could now be on the streets next year after being imprisoned in a secure psychiatric care facility for the horrific fatal attack in 2014.

this morning revealed Bellante was "flying through the system" at the Central Mental Hospital where he was committed last year after being found not guilty of the gruesome murder by reason of insanity.

Justice sources have revealed that doctors have been encouraged by Bellante's recovery and could approve him for day release in the next 12 months.

He could also be returned to his native Italy in the next 24 months.

One source said: "Saverio is the nicest guy you could meet.

"I know that sounds crazy considering what he did, but when he is on his meds, he is absolutely fine. He should never have come off them.

"You would never have thought he could have committed the horrific act he did."

The source added: "It wouldn’t surprise me if he was out on day release next year and then out completely in 2018.

"That’s the sort of progress he’s making. He is ticking all the boxes."

Bellante killed his housemate Tom with a dumbbell and knife after the pair got into a fight over a game of chess at the Beechpark Avenue House they shared in Castleknock.

The man then ate what he thought was the victim's heart, with forensic tests later proving it was part of the man's lung.

During the Sicilian's trial for murder, the court heard the man had been diagnosed with mental health problems in 2005.

Bellante was put on anti-psychotic medication and mood stabilisers after becoming fixated on religion and the battle between good and evil.

But he was gradually eased off his medication - stopping taking his drugs completely just days before his fatal attack on O'Gorman.

A source said: "Saverio is doing really well in Dundrum. He is in all the groups going.

"He is a good musician and is in the band. He is also a really good footballer and is on the hospital team. He’s probably their best player.

"When he is on his medication he is absolutely fine, the nicest guy you could meet. It’s a real tragedy what happened."
