The ex-Conservative politician was arrested last year on suspicion of “historical sexual offences”.

Last night the prosecutors confirmed: “The CPS has received a file of evidence from the Metropolitan Police related to allegations against one person and is now reviewing the material in line with our legal test.”

A Met Police spokeswoman said: “On June 21, 2021, a man was arrested on suspicion of historical sexual offences.

"The alleged offences were committed between 2004 and 2010, and relate to one female victim.

“Detectives have passed a case file to the Crown Prosecution Service for review. There have been no other arrests.”

The case is sure to reignite the Pestminster scandal that has seen a slew of politicians — from both sides of the chamber — brought down for sex abuse.

The revelation comes on the day of the Chester by-election, which was triggered by a Labour MP quitting the Commons over sexual harassment allegations.

Christian Matheson, 54, was found to have committed two “serious sexual misconduct” offences against a former junior member of staff.

The Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards recommended he be suspended from the Commons for four weeks — but he resigned instead.

Seven MPs are currently suspended from their political parties after facing claims of sexual misconduct.

Another anonymous Tory MP is currently on bail by the Met Police for allegations of rape.

In July, The Sun revealed Tory whip Chris Pincher was accused of drunkenly groping two men in a club — leading to his resignation and in part triggering the collapse of Boris Johnson’s government.

Separately, Tory MP Neil Parish resigned after The Sun revealed he had watched porn in the House of Commons.

Last night the Conservative Party declined to comment.
