Can I use my bus pass on a train?

COMMUTERS may be interested to learn that there a wide range of different bus passes with different capabilities.

Can I use my bus pass on a train?

It depends on the area that you are in. Within London, a travelcard (in the zones it is valid for) allows you to travel across the city on all Transport for London (TFL) services, including trains, buses, The London Underground and DLR.

However, outside of London this isn't necessarily the case. Services ran by companies such as Great Western Railway (GWR) do not allow bus passes to be used on trains, and require passengers to purchase a separate ticket for their journey.

GWR do allow passengers to get a discount on a bus pass if they purchase one with a train ticket. , the name of the scheme, allows commuters free bus travel around the town or city of which they are headed to, and is valid in over 60 locations across the UK.

When can I get a bus pass?

You are eligible for a bus pass at any age, but there are different passes that apply to certain age groups.

Oyster have a range of junior travelcards, which provides free and discounted travel in London to children aged 5-10, 11-15, as well as a card for people aged 16-18.

Students aged 18 or over who live in a London borough are eligible for a Oyster photocard and discounted travel, as long as they are enrolled in full-time education at the time.

People aged 60 and over are eligible for a freedom pass, which entitles them to free travel on all TFL services, but only inside London.

What can I use my bus pass for?

This depends on where the bus pass has been purchased from and what areas the pass is valid in.

An Oyster card can be used across all TFL services, but only in London. This means that commuters are able to use it on all trains in the capital, as well as on other services run by TFL.

Outside of London, other companies have different rules, meaning that passes are not always usable on trains and other modes of transport.
