Editor faces hate crime trial for calling migrants ‘testosterone-driven Syrians’

Austrian journalist - who said many were sex offenders -  would be first newsman prosecuted over crisis

A NEWSPAPER editor who attacked migrants in his column is facing trial for hate crimes in Austria.

Christoph Biro labelled them “testosterone-driven Syrians” and claimed many had carried out “extremely aggressive sexual assaults”.

He also accused Afghans of slashing seats on trains transporting them to Germany because they refused to sit where Christians had previously sat.

Several people have been convicted for anti-migrant statements in Austria and Germany but Mr Biro would be the first journalist prosecuted there since the migrant crisis flared up last year.

Thirty-seven people complained about the piece in Austria’s largest paper Kronen Zeitung almost exactly a year ago.

Mr Biro, a journalist for 39 years, took four weeks off from his position at the time, saying that he had lost perspective over the situation.

Prosecutors in Graz are said to be seeking charges against him after an appeal by left-wing human rights group SOS Mitmensch.
