According to local reports, the man had been carrying out work at a site in St. Gallen, Switzerland, on Wednesday evening when the shocking accident occurred.

Colleagues believe he fell through a trap door into the burning metal beneath him.

He was reportedly immersed in the molten liquid up to his knees but managed to pull himself free.

Doctors and paramedics quickly scrambled to the scene, before the injured worker was whisked off to hospital in an air ambulance.

Doctors confirmed he sustained extensive burns and injuries in the accident and is now in a stable condition.

Local police have now opened an investigation into the accident to determine what happened.

It comes eight years after another employee suffered significant facial burns at the site.

Earlier this week, locals in the same Swiss city were left horrified after a woman was severely injured in a freak accident.

According to ATS, the woman had been run over three times by her own car after briefly stepping out of the vehicle on a slippery slope.

Reports suggest she had left the engine running and had attempted to stop the car rolling away before she was knocked to the ground.

Before she could get back up the car slammed into another parked vehicle and rebounded – hitting her a second time.

The vehicle then crashed into a pavement - sending it careering back over the helpless motorist before eventually coming to a standstill against a wooden barrier.

Swiss police confirmed she was later taken to hospital where she remains in a serious condition.
