He dragged it several feet under his wheels, leaving a trail of feathers.

Police are hunting him after being alerted by Norwich pigeon fan group Peck Savers.

The group put security camera footage of the city centre incident on social media.

It claims he was also filmed finishing off the injured bird with his walking stick.

It said on Facebook “he seemed to swerve to hit a pigeon” before he got up, steadied it under his foot and crushed its head with his stick.

Peck Savers said the video showed there was no other pedestrians walking up the hill for ten seconds before the collision which would have accounted for the pensioner’s sudden change of direction.

A Norfolk Police spokeswoman said: “Pigeons and other pest species listed under General Licenses (GL) can be killed for very certain reasons and if certain measures are met.

"In this case, no GL will apply so it is an offence in these circumstances."
