Boy battered by hammer-wielding thugs as he waited for a bus

A SCHOOLBOY who was ambushed by a gang of thugs who chased him and then used a hammer to batter his head, was detained in hospital today.
Five or six attackers piled out of a car which had pulled up alongside the 16-year-old.
He was chased down the street before being cornered and beaten.
Police said that it was believed the attack was "isolated" but appealed for help from the public in tracking down the assailants.
The vicious beating happened on a street in Oxford.
A spokesman for Thames Valley Police said: "At around 4.40pm on Thursday the victim, a 16-year-old boy, was waiting for a bus on St Clements Street when a car pulled up beside him.
"The victim was then approached by the front seat passenger of the car before running on to Rectory Road, where he was followed on foot and by the car.

"The victim was then attacked by a number of men from the car, one of whom used a hammer. The victim sustained injuries to his head and is currently receiving hospital treatment. There were five or six offenders aged between 18 and 20 years.
"The first offender, the front seat passenger, is an Asian man, around 6ft 3ins tall, of a slim build and with short black hair.
"He was wearing a grey tracksuit with elasticised ankles and a grey tracksuit top which had darker grey arms.
"The car was a dark people carrier, possibly a Volkswagen Touran," said the spokesman.
Investigating officer Police constable Laura Oakes said: "We are carrying out a thorough investigation and at this stage we believe this is an isolated incident.
"This took place on a busy street and I would like to hear from anyone who recognises the description of the offenders or of the car. If you have any information at all relating to this incident please contact me via the Thames Valley Police non-emergency number 101."
