Nurse Lucy Letby ‘murdered baby weighing less than 2lb by forcing air into his stomach’

NURSE Lucy Letby murdered a baby weighing less than 2lb by forcing air into his stomach, a jury heard yesterday.

It was said to be the only plausible explanation for why he collapsed and stopped breathing.

Dr Dewi Evans, an independent consultant paediatrician, said: “His collapse is consistent with a volume of air into the stomach.

“If the diaphragm is unable to move, then your lungs can’t get fresh air or oxygen into them.”

He said the baby had been “feisty” before his collapse at the Countess of Chester Hospital, Cheshire, in June 2015 and “was not going to suddenly drop dead”.

He added: “This baby was put into harm’s way.”
