The former barman, who bottles his in Mexico City, was helped to create it by a nun in Yucatan who is renowned for making hot sauces.

Arlo and Madra Aurora, 70, experimented at her farm with various combinations before hitting on a zesty winner.

His Number One sauce has been picked up by Brit burger chain MEATliquor and trendy delis.

Arlo, who moved from the Lake District to Mexico last year, said: “When I told people here what I’m doing they just thought it was hilarious.

“They asked ‘Do the English like spice?’ They think we only eat bland food like fish and chips.”

Arlo, who lives with dentist girlfriend Sandra Cervantes, 35, added: “Most hot sauces in the UK are made in the UK or imported from the US.

“I’m the only Englishman who is making hot sauce in Mexico.”

Arlo’s relish contains roasted peppers, vinegar, salt and a secret spice blend.

He said: “It packs a punch but won’t blow your head off. It’s very versatile.
