The woman - who has not been identified yet - reportedly fell into a deep pit named Aslghi on October 25.

Sources told local site Our Moroccan News that the woman fell "into a hole" near the top of the mountain, in front of her climbing partner - also a Brit.

She was left seriously injured following the fall and died at the scene.

Emergency services from Morocco's Royal Gendarmerie, Civil Protection and police rushed to the scene.

The pair reportedly headed to the mountain from Al Rovij, choosing not to hire a guide for the challenging journey.

The woman's body was transported from the mountain.

An investigation into the circumstances of her death has been launched.

An FCDO spokesperson said: "We have provided support to the family of a British woman who died in Morocco on 25th October."

Mount Toubkal is North Africa's tallest mountain at 4,167m (13,600ft) - a challenge even for the most experienced climbers.

It is located in the southwestern part of the country, in the Toubkal National Park, around 40 miles from Marrakesh.
