A man wearing "all black and a black Joker mask with a plastic nose" was then seen running through gardens.

One local told The Sun Online: "My son was watching the Diwali fireworks while I was in the sitting room.

"He saw a man break next door's fence and run through the gardens.

"The man was wearing all black and had a black joker mask, like a clown mask, on with a plastic nose."

Zain Mohammad, 19, said: "My friend said two cars pulled up and shot at three people.

"It’s mad.”

Another said she heard "screams and shouting" in the middle of the night.

Samima Ahmad, 50, said: "I was shaken by the screams around 12.15am.

"There was bunch of youngsters running around, it was a gang of people.

"After about an hour there was an ambulance, helicopters and police, it was very frightening."

Some locals believe the shooter may have used Diwali fireworks to cover up the sound of gunshots.

One, who believes gangs could be behind the horror, said: "It seems they were using the Diwali fireworks as cover, if you think about it, there were a lot of fireworks going off.

"There was a lot of things going on, so it was a perfect time."

The Met said they believe they know the identity of the first victim but are working to identify the second.

Inspector Dave Holgate said: "Tragically two men lost their lives this morning and another was seriously injured following an appalling act of violence right here in Ilford.

"We were called at 12:16am today to reports of a fight and shots fired at a residential address here on Henley Road.
