Stratford station evacuated 24 hours after counter-terror police carry out controlled explosion at North Greenwich

HUNDREDS of people have been evacuated from Stratford station during the morning rush hour due to a fire scare.

It comes just  24 hours after counter-terror police carried out a controlled explosion on a suspect device at nearby North Greenwich.

British Transport Police said officers were called to Stratford station at 9am after a fire alarm went off.

A spokesman said: "As part of the safety procedure the station has been evacuated.

"Officers remain at the scene and it is not yet known what caused the alarm."

A TFL spokesman added: "The station has been closed due to a fire alert.

"The Jubilee line is suspended from West Ham to Stratford and mainline services from Stratford have been affected.

"It is not yet known when services will resume or what caused the fire alert."

North Greenwich station, close to the O2, was closed shortly after 11am yesterday, and a bomb squad carried out a controlled detonation of the item.

Counter-terror police are now probing the incident.

A spokesman for British Transport Police  said: "Just after 11am today we were called to North Greenwich station after train staff reported finding a suspicious item on board a eastbound Jubilee Line train.

"Specialist officers from BTP and Metropolitan Police attended the scene. As a precaution a controlled detonation has since taken place in order to ensure the item was safe.

"An investigation is now underway led by the Metropolitan Police supported by BTP.

"The station remains closed as enquiries continue and we encourage people to check with Transport for London before travelling."
