A SYRIAN migrant crying out "Allah" terrified people after rampaging through the street climbing on cars and a tram and trying to kill himself with its electric power line.
The incident took place in the Austrian capital of Vienna and was recorded on a mobile phone by a passer-by.
In the video, the Syrian is seen going berserk and towards the end seems to want to commit suicide by grabbing overhead power lines.
He then topples off the tram, landing hard on the road in front of it, before he is finally subdued.
The man who was not named was identified as a 23-year-old asylum seeker.
According to online reports, an acquaintance of the man was quoted as saying he had just received word that the house of his parents has been bombed in an air raid near the Syrian capital of Damascus, with his father killed and his mother and siblings seriously injured.
Police said they were still investigating, and have not ruled out any scenarios as to the reason for the man's actions.
Local media said that the man had wanted to highlight the situation of the people in Syria and Palestine.
When questioned later, speaking in Arabic he denied that he was a terrorist and that he was connected with the Islamic State, but said little of anything else other than the fact that "Assad and Putin are not good people."
After being interviewed the 23-year-old was taken to a hospital to be examined by a psychiatrist.
