‘Wonderful’ mum, 48, dies after being hit by lightning strike while on holiday with her two children
A “WONDERFUL” British mum was killed after being hit by lightning while on a family holiday in Croatia, an inquest heard.
Daniella DiMambro suffered a cardiac arrest after a freak lightning strike hit her in the ear this summer.
Mairin Casey, the senior coroner for , said that the 48-year-old mum of two suffered a fatal brain injury as a result, despite a bystander’s desperate CPR attempts.
She was rushed to a Croatian hospital in August, before being moved back to the UK, where she later died of her injuries.
Daniella, who worked as a physiotherapist, was at a beach near the tourist hotspot of Split when she was hit.
A specialist in London agreed that she was unlikely to recover, at which point she was placed on ‘neurological pathway’ care, which led to end-of-life care.
The doctor treating her referred the case to the coroner.
Ms Casey called it a “very unusual and desperately sad case”.
She went on to express her sympathies for the family, who did not attend the hearing.
A JustGiving page has been set up in Daniella’s memory to raise funds for The Brain Charity, which has so far received £345 in donations.

Loved ones have flooded the page with tributes to her.
One wrote: “My thoughts are with the family after this tragic event.
“Dani was a wonderful, talented and vibrant woman.”
Another added: “Lovely lady who’ll be greatly missed by everyone.”
Details of the funeral have been posted on Facebook.
It is set to take place on Friday, 28 October at 9am at the Gedling Crematorium, Nottingham.
A statement on the page asked mourners to donate to a range of charities rather than “buying tons of flowers”.
The charities include The Salvation Army and Dementia UK.
According to National Geographic, around 2,000 people are killed by lighting globally each year.
However, the same data suggests 90 per cent of the strike victims survive, although many suffer severe burns and cardiac arrests.
