The system appears to be a combination of a handheld device and a home console.

In the video, players are seen playing on an aeroplane before going home, slotting the console into a docking port and then getting busy on the big screen.

The video (which can be seen above) emphasised multiplayer fun, showing pretty boys and girls meeting up to collectively waggle their joysticks.

It starts with the stereotypical view of a gamer: lonely, male and sitting in a dark room with only a dog for company.
Then the music kicks in, the Switch logo drops and the formerly isolated gamer is shown heading out into the big bright world to play with various attractive people.

One woman with bobbed hair is then shown in her bright, airy flat playing Super Mario contentedly.

Her friends then wave to her from a neighbouring rooftop and she pays them a visit, making sure to bring her party starter: a Nintendo Switch console.

This piece of the footage shows that when Switch is in the carry-around form it has two mini controllers attached to its side.

The young lady with the bob is shown handing the controllers to her  telegenic young chums, who then start playing along with her.

Nintendo's vid also nodded to the gender war currently tearing the world asunder, showing rival teams of chaps and ladies preparing to play each other at a game which appears to be Splatoon.

The Switch was originally codenamed NX and today was the first time its real name was announced.

Social media lit up after the announcement with gamers who were almost indecently excited by the news.

One person sounded a small note of caution and wrote: "It looks interesting but may be easily breakable.

"Interested to see what mix of console and handheld games there are on it."
