THUNDERSTORMS and lightning will bash the UK in the coming days with Brits warned to brace for high winds and heavy downpours.

Torrential rain and gales will arrive from Wednesday, pushing the bad weather north across the country.

And it will come alongside longer spells of rain and strong winds expected to last all the way up to the weekend.

Thursday is expected to see the worst of the weather, with areas of persistent rain set to lash the south before clearing.

Friday is expected to be generally unsettled, with a mix of cloud and sharp showers forecast for many.

A Met Office spokesperson told The Sun thunder and lightning will strike from Wednesday.

They said: "Generally speaking it will be very unsettled from Wednesday across most of the country.

"This will pass through leaving many areas wet and windy and many will experience high winds.

"The heaviest rain will fall in parts of south west Wales, the north and in high areas."

It comes as Monday morning will see early outbreaks of rain in eastern areas of England before being expected to clear later.

Meanwhile, Scotland and Northern Ireland will see outbreaks of heavy downpours throughout the day with high winds in the north.

Elsewhere it will be mostly dry with sunny spells, according to the .

Despite the wet and windy weather, Monday will remain mild for most.

There will be highs of 19C in London, 18C in Norwich, 17C in Plymouth and 13C in Glasgow.

Into this evening and overnight the weather will clear up for many with dry and clear patches expected.

But fog patches are likely to form in areas overnight while showers and winds will blow into the far north.

Tuesday will see this fog clearing late morning before ushering in dry and sunny spells for most.

But there are showers forecast for the northeast and southwest.

Tuesday will see highs of 18C in Cardiff, 17C in Plymouth, 16C in Norwich, 13C in Newcastle and 13C in Glasgow.
