Her sickening ordeal only ended when other temple visitors tackled the madman, and held onto him until police arrived.

The footage was captured on a CCTV camera installed inside the Kotilingeshwara temple in the city of Kolar, in southern India's Karnataka State.

The victim was identified only by her first name Kumari, and it is reproted she is the administrator of the temple.

She was rushed to hospital with horrific wounds, but is expected to survive the brutal attack.

The attacker has been identified by his first name, Santosh, and is a 24-year-old engineer who lives in the same village as Kumari.
