A PASSENGER plane was intercepted by two Typhoon fighter jets over a suspected bomb threat.

The Jet2 Airbus A321 - on its way from Dalaman, Turkey to Manchester - was diverted to Stansted Airport, Essex.

The plane landed at the airfield and was taxied to an isolated area, away from the main terminal, after authorities were alerted over a "potential security threat".

Armed police were waiting on the runway for the plane to land amid a reported bomb scare.

The plane was escorted to the airport by two RAF fighter jets.

Several emergency vehicles including fire engines were scrambled to the scene.

Departures were paused and passengers were held on the plane while cops investigated.

A spokesman for Jet2 told The Sun Online: "We can confirm that flight LS922 from Dalaman to Manchester diverted to London Stansted this evening under the direction of the UK authorities.

"The aircraft landed safely and taxied to a remote stand, and customers have now disembarked.

"Our teams are working very hard to look after customers, and we would like to apologise to everyone onboard for any inconvenience or upset caused by this unforeseen incident.

"We understand that the authorities were alerted to a potential security threat, however this has been downgraded and the incident has been declared as over.”

A spokesman for Stansted Airport confirmed the plane was met by Essex Police on arrival.

They added: "A Jet2.com flight from Dalaman to Manchester diverted to Stansted Airport this evening.

"The plane landed safely and is parked on a remote stand away from the main passenger terminal.

"The runway was closed for a short time but has now re-opened.”

The flight was due to land in Manchester at 9.40pm, but was forced to divert.

It touched down at Stansted Airport shortly after 9.20pm.

Stansted Airport has a designated area for bomb threats.
