Terrified neighbours hear screams as ‘amazing’ schoolboy, 14, stabbed to death with teen arrested for murder

NEIGHBOURS have told of their horror after hearing screams when an "amazing" schoolboy, 14, was stabbed to death.

It comes as cops arrested a lad, 14, on suspicion of murder and also a girl, 13, in connection with assisting an offender.

Cops and paramedics rushed to the Aycliffe Crescent area of the Springwell Estate, Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, after reports of a boy being seriously injured shortly after 8pm on Monday.

Officers said the youngster, 14, had suffered an injury consistent with having been caused by a blade.

The teen was hospitalised but passed away in the early hours of this Tuesday, despite the best efforts of medics.

Local residents have paid heartbreaking tributes to the lad, describing him as an "amazing friend to many" with a "gorgeous smile".

Speaking to , one resident also said she is frightened to go out at night.

She added: "My mother heard screaming from the nature park. The police were here around 10 minutes later.

"This is the first time something like this has happened in the area. It is not the best area."

A second resident said she was "fearful" for her own son's safety following the tragedy.

She said: "It is shocking what has happened.

"This area has got a bit of a reputation but where I am it has been fine.

"I have had to explain to my son why all the police are here. I am fearful for my son."

Officers arrested a 14-year-old boy, who remains in police custody.

Meanwhile, the 13-year-old girl faces a grilling by cops.

The victim's family are being supported by specially-trained officers.

Chief Superintendent Helena Barron said: “A teenage boy has sadly died and his family have been left devastated beyond belief.

"Our thoughts are very much with his loved ones at this time and we are supporting them in every way we can.

“We are determined to find out exactly what happened and a full investigation is ongoing into the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.

“We have arrested two teenagers in relation to the incident and officers remain in the area to carry out a range of enquiries and offer reassurance to the community.

“While incidents of this nature are rare in our region, whenever they do occur we are committed to bringing those responsible to justice.”

She urged the public "not to speculate" on details of the investigation and called for anyone with information to come forward.

Superintendent Barron added: “What might seem like an innocent post on social media to you, could in reality disrupt an on-going investigation and cause further upset to the family of the victim.

“We would ask that if you did see something or have information in relation to what has happened, please come forward directly to officers.”
