When asked by Cooper, who moderated the second debate between her husband and Hillary Clinton, if she thought her husband was "egged on" she said "yes."

Presenter Billy Bush, who was talking to Trump on the tape 11 years ago, was fired in the wake of the audio going public on Monday. In the tape the billionaire could be heard saying: he "grabbed women by the p****."

Melania also suggested that there was an orchestrated campaign against her husband: "Many people from the opposite side they want to damage the campaign."

She went on to claim NBC knew about the 2005 Access Hollywood tape "long ago" and it was released at a certain time by the network.

She revealed Trump had "apologised and she told the presenter: "I accepted his apology and I hope the American people will as well, He (the man on the tape) is not the man that I know."

Melania went on to say that she and her husband always new it was going to be tough running for president, because of his career in the public eye. He did so many stuff (sic) in his life on so many tapes, so many shows, we knew that tapes would come out."

In defence of Trump she said: "He's real he's raw, he's kind, he's a gentleman, he supports women, he encourages them to go to the highest level, to achieve their dreams."

Melania repeatedly blamed the media for "unkind" coverage which she said was "not true" and "lies."

In reference to the allegations of sexual assault, Melania said she did not believe what the women were saying was true: "I believe my husband, This was all organised from the opposition.

Did they ever check the background of these women, they don't have any facts?"

When asked by Cooper about Trump's derogatory comments regarding some of the women's appearance she responded: "That's him, he's raw. He will say it as he feels it. I know he respects women, but he is defending himself, because they are lies."

Cooper also questioned Melania about Michelle Obama's observation that Trump's remarks amounted to a confession of sexual assault.

She said emphatically: "No it's not sexual assault. I see many women come and give him their numbers and want to work with him, and inappropriate stuff from women."

She said she dealt with it because she was "very strong. Don't feel sorry for me,. I can handle everything."

Melania added: "To accuse an man or a woman without evidence, it is damaging and unfair."

Trump also told the presenter she saw Clinton's past as fair game too, and implied Hillary's campaign may have been linked to the release of nude pictures of her in a same-sex erotic shoot which was taken for a European magazine.

In defence of the pictures she said: "I am not ashamed of my body, I feel very confident of myself and my body. In Europe we are proud - it was done as art, as a celebration of the female body."

Cooper asked how she was dealing with all the allegations and she told him: "I'm doing great. I take of care of myself and my husband."

Melania was later interviewed by host Ainsley Earnhardt. In that conversation, to be broadcast on Tuesday, she "will share the conversation she had with her husband on the day she found out about the Access Hollywood tape".
