Murder probe after woman, 27, stabbed to death and man, 25, critically wounded in Newcastle street

Three men are in custody after the Monday afternoon attack in the Arthurs Hill area of the city near St James' Park

POLICE have launched a murder investigation after a woman was stabbed to death in the street in broad daylight.

The 27-year-old woman and a man aged 25 both suffered knife wounds in the attack in Newcastle upon Tyne yesterday afternoon.

The two victims were rushed to hospital where the woman died and the man is fighting for life.

Northumbria Police said three men have been arrested over the double stabbing in the Arthurs Hill area of the city near St James' Park.

Last night forensics officers could be seen working at the scene where a white tent had been erected in Stanhope Street.

A force spokesman said: "At 3.50pm on Monday, police received a report from the ambulance service that two people had been taken to hospital after being assaulted in Stanhope Street.

"They both suffered stab wounds and were taken to hospital for treatment.

"The 25-year-old man remains in hospital in a critical but stable condition at this time. However the 27-year-old woman sadly died as a result of her injuries.

"Three men, aged 22, 25 and 25, have been arrested in connection with the incident and are currently in police custody."

A section of the street remains closed off early today and extra patrols are being carried out to reassure residents and identify witnesses.

Police said: "The investigation is in its very early stages and although three arrests have been made detectives are very keen to hear from anyone who was in the area of Stanhope Street around the time of the incident and who might have seen or heard anything."
