As lectures are set to start up next week, youngsters are making the most of their new found freedom before knuckling down and hitting the books.

Plenty of fancy dress was on show, while others glammed up for their night on the town, heading into the big weekend blowout before term begins.

Costumes included '80s workout video-style leotards, tins of beans, Shrek and a motorway sign.

Some were more dressed up than others, though, as a couple of brave souls in Nottingham gritted their teeth against the September chill and ventured out in budgie smugglers.

It comes as thousands of students across the country return to universities after a long, hot summer.

Excited youngsters swarmed into pubs and clubs for a night of boozy fun.

Huge queues formed outside student hotspots as eager teens waited to get in.

Freshers' Week typically marks the start of the year, welcoming newbies onto the campus.

Events are put on officially by student unions, while local nightlife outlets often run promotions to attract student customers.

The crowd are usually first-years celebrating being away from home and given more freedom, many for the first time.
