The experienced photographer said that while many of the people involved in the fetish world were perfectionist, he did not want perfection, instead aiming to simply capture the reality of the world many people did not understand.
He travelled across Europe, including to Brussels, Amsterdam, Paris and Berlin, as well as to Japan for the three-year project.
To gain entry into the parties, he often wore a badge, given to him by the hosts.
But the real challenge was to make sure the photographs he took were natural and not posed.
He admitted that while trying to capture images of the alien world he was sometimes misunderstood by those he was photographing, with some approaching him to be involved or others angry at his work.
But the photographer said he always politely extricated himself.
He admitted that while he was not a fetishist, he believed everyone had their own compulsions, infatuations and phobias.
He said: "Well, I am not a fetishist per se, although all photographers are, in a way, real voyeurs."
The word fetish comes from the Portugeuese phrase feiticeria, meaning "witchcraft".
