Company representatives told that they are a year away from being able to launch people into space.

"This test got us one step closer to human spaceflight," Blue Origin President Rob Meyerson said.

"We're still on track for flying people — our test astronauts — by the end of 2017, and then starting commercial flights in 2018."

The New Shepard vehicle consists of passenger space and a rocket, which has been designed by Blue Origin, a company started up by Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon.

The company recently underwent a series of safety tests to see if members of the capsule would be able to survive during a real-life emergency.

According to Meyerson the test went well.

The capsule was able to parachute back down to earth and the ship's booster managed to allow it to land softly.

Meyerson believed the test wasn't going to go down too well and was reported to say: "I thought we were going to lose it."

However the successful landing marks the fifth successful one for the ship, with Bezos saying the rocket will now be transported to a museum for display.

"Which museum is to be determined, and Jeff Bezos will make that decision," Meyerson said. "We're going to start thinking about that shortly."
