He then rushed  Jacob Larson, who was in the dock, and had been talking back to the judge.

He had been blaming his alleged stalking behaviour on the woman he had been pursuing.

The judge had ordered Larson to spend three days in prison, but as he continued to talk back, the sentence went up to 93 days.

It is rare for a judge to use physical force, but is allowable under law as circuit court judges have arresting powers.

Jackson County Chief Circuit Judge Thomas Wilson said: "A judge has the power to take whatever action is necessary to maintain order in the courtroom."

Wilson had seen the court recording of the hearing, but there is no review process for such incidents, he said.

The court officer attempted to take Larson into custody, but he refused.

He then began to "hand fight" with officer Jared Schultz who said he then tensed up and made a fist.

McBain assisted to get Larson's hands, arms and elbows under control.
