Two drunk sisters were like ‘animals’ as they attacked their aunt TWICE during funeral
Mums Lisa and Rebecca Mullins ended up scrapping on floor in front of grieving family and relatives at send-off
TWO drunk sisters viciously assaulted their aunt TWICE during a funeral in front of grieving family and relatives.
Lisa and Rebecca Mullins repeatedly punched and kicked Karen Madden after a row broke out between them, a court heard.
The market trader said it felt like she was “being attacked by animals” and “genuinely believed they wanted to kill” her, Burnley Crown Court was told.
Barbara Webster, prosecuting, told the court how Mrs Madden suffered bruises, bite marks to her face and body and had hair missing.
The court heard how Mrs Madden missed three weeks of work and had “sleepless nights” following the incident at the Conservative Club in Bacup, Lancs, on January 28 this year.
The court was told how the trio ended up scrapping on the floor after 28-year-old Lisa Mullins first clashed with Madden.
Later after an attempt to restore peace failed Madden was punched and kicked in a melee that included 29-year-old Rebecca Mullins’s partner Zac Cullen and a family member Nicholas Mulcahy.
Barristers defending Lisa and Rebecca Mullins said they were feeling “very stressed and upset” at the recent loss of two family members.
The court heard how the sisters were at the funeral of a relative, but were also upset over the death of James Mulcahy, a close cousin who had passed – 13 months after he had been stabbed and placed on a life support machine.
John Marsh, defending Rebecca Mullins, told the court:“She was very drunk that evening.
“She was quite disgusted with herself when she saw the CCTV and genuinely didn’t realise the magnitude of what she’s done.”
Charlotte Johnson, defending Lisa Mullins, said the death of James Mulcahy had affected her
“very gravely”.
She said: “Miss Mullins quite understandably was not herself at the time and the loss hit her very hard. “She reacted too much.”
Lisa and Rebeccaboth of Bacup, Lancs pleaded guilty to affray and ABH and were given 32-week jail sentences, suspended for 12 months.
Mum-of-two Rebecca Mullins was ordered to carry out 150 hours unpaid work and pay Mrs Madden £500 compensation while Lisa Mullins, also a mum of two, was also ordered to carry out 100 hours unpaid work and pay £400 compensation to her victim.
Zac Cullen, 33, of Pennine Road, Bacup, and Nicholas Mulcahy, 42, of no fixed abode, both pleaded guilty to affray and common assault.
Self-employed tiler Cullen was given a 22-week jail sentence, suspended for 12 months and ordered to pay £400 compensation to Anthony Madden.
Mulcahy, who also pleaded guilty to three separate burglary offences, was jailed for 36 months.
