Cheeky Marmite lovers have been selling the spread online for thousands of pounds as panic grips the nation

PANIC is spreading across the country as Marmite lovers stockpile their favourite spread in the face fears of a national shortage.

The panic began after a bitter row between Tesco and supplier Unilever broke out, with the supermarket giant refusing to pay the cost increase of 10 per cent demanded by the Dutch-British company.

#Marmitegate has since begun to trend on Twitter with people sharing their panic - and memes - online.

People have revealed they were already planning on stockpiling the black stuff with Sarah Hapgood tweeting: "Old lady nearby earlier talking about the Marmite crisis. Remind me to stockpile some when I get home. If it's not too late by then ..."

Others agreed, with Tom Saible tweeting: "Living in a village, I usually stockpile Marmite, but I might have to do a special supermarket run just to be on the safe side."

Another wrote: "Went into Tesco last week and brought all the Marmite. Don't even like it. Just did it for a laugh."

Nick Reay also tweeted: "Anyway, off to Tesco to get the last jar of Marmite..."

One shopper noted that only three jars of Marmite were left at his local Tesco.

One happy shopper wrote: "Thank goodness I bought a big jar of Marmite last week in my local Tesco store!!"

It is not clear whether the products have sold out or have been voluntarily pulled from the shelves by Tesco staff.

It's not only Marmite that has gone missing from the shelves, with empty spaces for Magnums and even Surf washing liquid revealed.

Other eagle-eyed shoppers have taken advantage of the panic, many trying to sell off their unopened jars for exorbitant prices.

But others pointed out that Tesco was not the only supermarket to sell Marmite, with one level-headed shopper saying: "Just curious, when did Asda, Morrisons and Sainsbury's shut down, leaving Tesco as the last shop to buy Marmite from?"

Products including Pot Noodle, PG Tips, Lynx and Flora have also been impacted by the stoush between Tesco and Unilever.

A Tesco spokesperson said: "We are currently experiencing availability issues on a number of Unilever products. We hope to have this issue resolved soon."

Unilever are one of the UK's biggest suppliers of branded foods and household goods with the dispute potentially leading to serious consequences.
