Police watchdog calls off investigation into claims chief constable told lawyers to blame Liverpool fans for stadium tragedy
IPCC threw out investigation after lack of evidence and was unable to access details of legal discussions
A WATCHDOG will not investigate claims that a chief constable instructed lawyers to “pour blame” on Liverpool fans at the Hillsborough inquests.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission said yesterday that while the approach of some of the legal teams “clearly caused distress” to victims’ families, there was no evidence of crime and it could not access details of legal discussions.
Suspended South Yorkshire Police Chief Constable David Crompton was criticised by campaigners.
The inquests found the 96 victims of the disaster were unlawfully killed.
Shortly before the verdicts, Labour's Andy Burnham hit out at South Yorkshire Police for "protecting itself above protecting people".
