There were delays of up to 45 minutes and cancellations on Great Northern Railway services because of the stand-off near Hatfield Station in Hertfordshire at roughly 5pm yesterday.
Three Hertfordshire Police officers were later seen running along a platform chasing after him as the station filled with commuters waiting for delayed trains home.
Twitter user Suchandrika tweeted out: "'There's still quite a struggle to get hold of the perpetrator' says our @GNRailUK train driver at Hatfield station".
Tia Hussain posted: "How many policeman does it take to tackle one man on the Hatfield train station tracks?! Delayed!"
The trespasser was eventually detained and taken to hospital but it is not clear if he suffered any injuries.
Footage of the man's alleged protest was tweeted out by Twitter user @GencayHassan.
In a separate post he commented: "Some geezer has actually run on the train tracks and standing in front of trains all coz he can't afford his train fare ffs."
A spokesman from Great Northern said: "While the incident was taking place, trains were stopped on the line while the police dealt with the incident."
The spokesman added: "It's reported that the police apprehended the person at around 17.20 and the lines were reopened at 17.30.
"The incident did cause disruption to Great Northern services with some trains cancelled and delays of up to 45 minutes at the height of the incident.
"Delay times reduced as the evening progressed and residual delays were felt up to the close of service last night.
"Great Northern ticket holders were able to use other train operators to complete their journeys."
