Fish & chips should be taken off menu to protect threatened species, report warns
FISH and chips should be taken off the menu to protect threatened fish species, a report says.
Every year, Britons eat 887,000 tons — equivalent to 5.2billion portions — and four-fifths comes from outside UK waters.
Whitefish, such as haddock and cod, accounts for almost a third.
But fishing methods have harmed more than 250 species, including whales, dolphins, tuna and sharks, as well as seabirds, the World Wide Fund for Nature reports.
It wants action to wean us off unsustainable seafood and has called for tougher laws to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing.
Spokeswoman Kate Norgrove said: “The ocean is the blue heart of our planet. Protecting this precious resource should be the top priority of every single fishery around the world.”
