Samsung sends fire resistant boxes to customers for total recall of Galaxy Note 7 ‘exploding’ handsets

The company supplies protective gloves to handle the phones in the kit which cannot be sent by air in the US for fear they will catch fire

SAMSUNG is sending out fire resistant boxes so customers can return their 'exploding' Galaxy Note 7 handsets.

The kit has a number of boxes and protective bags, and one has fire resistant coating.

Users in the US started to get the boxes on Tuesday along with protective gloves, and a warning saying the phones could only be sent by ground in case they exploded in the air.

This is in response to one handset which was powered down on a flight and still started smoking.

The Royal Mail has refused to handle returns over safety fears.

A spokesman for the United States Postal Service confirmed to the there was concern over the phones but would ship them, saying: "The Postal Service will only ship Samsung Note 7 devices via USPS Retail Ground/Parcel Select due to potential safety hazards pertaining to lithium ion batteries.

"Mailers must package the smartphone in rigid packaging, such as cardboard or hard plastic boxes. Soft packs and padded envelopes are not acceptable."

The inner box of the packaging has a ceramic fiber lining which is a quarter-inch thick, which covers the entire interior.

Samsung has provided blue gloves so users who are sensitive to the fibers won't get a reaction.

An instruction sheet explained: "Supplied safety gloves should be worn throughout as some individuals might be sensitive to the ceramic fiber paper lining the Recovery Box."

The recall could cost Samsung as much as ($19 billion) and if every handset is refunded it will cost around ($2.2billion) if every handset produced is refunded at an estimated ($850).

A Samsung spokesman has confirmed the handset has been "permanently discontinued" after safer replacements of the phones were still catching fire.
