Dozens of firefighters extinguish blaze that sent flames pouring from roof of Berlin’s Europa Centre landmark
Shopping centre was closed to visitors and roads around building blocked
A BLAZE that sent flames and black smoke pouring from the top of Berlin's landmark Europa Centre has been extinguished.
The fire on the roof of the iconic building burned for more than an hour this afternoon with 60 firefighters on the scene trying to prevent damage.
The shopping centre was closed to visitors and roads to the building were blocked as emergency services worked.
The blaze was contained to the roof of the 282ft building.
A fire brigade spokesman has said that buildings were evacuated and no one was in danger.
People working inside the building told that they were alerted to the blaze on the roof after friends called them and they looked outside to see the smoke.
Unconfirmed information suggests the blaze may have been caused by a transformer station on the roof, Berliner Morgenpost reports.
