Plastic fantastic

This bloke has found an incredible use for the new £5 note

A man from Norwich has discovered that the plastic fiver is far more useful than anyone could have expected

The new £5 has a secret superpower: playing vinyl records.

Michael Ridge, from Norwich, has uploaded a video of himself playing ABBA's 'Money, Money, Money' on his turntable using the new £5 note as a needle.

Due to the note's plastic construction, it is capable of playing the sounds of a record by 'reading' the sounds in the record's grooves.

Ridge claims he was easily able to pick up the sound of his record by using the £5 note, a contact microphone and a small amplifier not shown on screen.

The new notes came into circulation last month and have already hit the news due to their "indestructibility".

This claim have been put to the test, with grime star JME cooking one in the oven and  YouTubers filming themselves as they put one through a washing machine.

However the Bank of England have declared the notes aren't actually indestructible and are actually just "durable".

The plastic fiver features Sir Winston Churchill and can survive a spin in the washing machine has entered circulation.

The Bank of England released 440million of the polymer £5 notes, which are expected to last around five years longer than paper ones.

Printed on them are the words: “I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat,” from the World War Two PM’s maiden speech.

Governor Mark Carney said: “The new fiver commemorates one of the greatest statesmen of all time, Winston Churchill, who remarked that ‘a nation that forgets its past has no future’.

“Banknotes are repositories of the United Kingdom’s collective memory, and we will be reminded of Churchill’s enormous contributions as he once again becomes part of our daily lives as the new fiver flows out into tills and pockets.”
